Meet our new(ish) Junior Copywriter

Greetings, Abi here. The new(ish) member of the Flourish clan. Being the new wordsmith, it seemed only right to use some wordy-ness to impart a few crucial lessons I’ve learned so far at Flourish.

Meeting new people isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but do not underestimate the power of a good first impression. Be keen, show your enthusiasm and in turn you will build a strong rapport with the people who can ultimately determine the part you play in the company. Be it big or small.

As my mum always told me: don’t be afraid to ask for help. Nobody knows everything from the get-go. The more you ask for help, the more knowledge you’ll gain and ultimately the better you’ll become. Like a sponge, absorb everything and retain as much relevant information as possible.

Obviously, I say this metaphorically. I wouldn’t advise turning up on your first week brightly coloured and a little bit salty – unless that’s the vibe you’re going for, of course. What I mean is, contain all the necessary ingredients (skills and knowledge) you need to do your job well, but also be malleable (open to suggestions and criticism) to help you achieve your full potential.

It’s a given that when working in an agency environment you’ll be faced with all sorts of different people – creatives, account handlers, directors and planners etc. Take an interest in what others do day-to-day and their role within the agency; it’ll give you a better insight into where you fit in and ultimately what you want to work towards.

When completing new tasks that may be out of your comfort zone, be sure to ask for feedback from those who are more experienced than you. If possible, find a willing mentor to teach you the ropes and build your confidence in decisions you make. These decisions may not hit the mark straight away, but nobody took over the world by playing it safe…

So, there you have it. What I’ve learned so far from my first couple months at Flourish.
